What is Microcrystalline Cellulose?

E460(i) or microcrystalline cellulose is a naturally non-caloric indigestible dietary fibre.

It has a long history in the pharmaceutical, vitamin and supplement industry commonly as an excipient in the tablet making process and in many ways it is the perfect excipient. A naturally occurring polymer, it is composed of glucose units connected by a 1-4 beta glycosidic bond, essentially cellulose which has been purified and partly depolymerised by treating alpha-cellulose, obtained as a wood pulp.
